Guarana – medicinal properties and uses
Guarana is a type of berry, mainly growing in Venezuela and northern Brazil. Why are we interested in it here in Poland? It turns out that guarana is a product with health-promoting properties.
Guarana can be found in encapsulated form, often in combination with ginseng. It is also a popular ingredient in energy drinks and tea and herbal blends. The forms in which guarana can be found already indicate its main use, which is related to the caffeine content in it – a basic chemical compound with stimulating properties, strengthening the processes of association and concentration.
Learn about the properties and uses of guarana.
Guarana berries are characterized by one of the highest caffeine contents that can be found in a natural product. About 7-8% of guarana seed composition is the aforementioned stimulating bioactive ingredient, while coffee beans contain about 3%. In addition, guarana also contains theophylline and theobromine – substances that act similarly to caffeine. This composition of guarana means that it is used primarily for:
• improving concentration and association skills,
• improving exercise capacity and enhancing the subjective feeling of strength, vitality and power – especially in the case of people who regularly engage in physical activity, but also among cancer patients,
• slowing down the effects of aging,
• reducing the frequency and intensity of migraines and rheumatic pain,
• reducing the frequency of constipation, but also diarrhea – and thus regulating digestive processes and peristaltic movements,
• reducing the negative effects of alcohol on the body (in other words, reducing the feeling of the popular “hangover”),
• appetite reduction, thus supporting the weight loss process – this is due to caffeine and guaranine which have a thermogenic effect (they support the processes of using adipose tissue as a source of energy and have a thermogenic effect),
• improving the quality of sexual life – as guarana is compared to ‘natural Viagra’, working on both men and women.
Should you be careful about guarana supplementation?
Due to the fact that guarana is a source of caffeine, you should be careful when taking too large doses of products containing the product described. Excessive consumption of caffeine – the main bioactive compound contained in guarana – can cause weakness, nervousness, hand tremors, as well as increased urine output and stomach problems. You should be especially careful when consuming additional sources of caffeine, such as coffee. Many people exceed the optimal tolerated dose without being aware of which products may contain this compound. It is worth being careful especially in the case of children and adolescents, the elderly and pregnant or breastfeeding women – for these groups, excessive caffeine intake can be very dangerous.
The use of guarana and medications?
Although studies do not indicate interactions between guarana and medications, it is worth considering the fact that the caffeine contained in guarana may have an effect on the action of medications and vice versa. You should be especially careful when taking medications such as clozapine, lithium, ephedrine, as well as when using drugs with theophylline and aminophylline, anxiolytic and sedative drugs, and drugs that act against high blood pressure. Guarana may also act similarly to aspirin – by thinning the blood, so it is safer not to use guarana supplementation while taking aspirin.
Guarana is a product with a proven beneficial effect on the human body. First of all, it is helpful in terms of metabolism, functioning of the nervous and digestive systems. It is worth considering its supplementation, especially because it is an ingredient rich in caffeine, and at the same time naturally occurring in nature. If used in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, it is characterized by a lack of harmful effects on the body. It is beneficial to take it during periods of great mental and physical exhaustion.
