Birch use and indications

Products containing birch are used as a diuretic in the treatment of urinary tract diseases, such as inflammation or the occurrence of deposits. The healing properties of birch are also used for colds and rheumatoid diseases. Birch is also found in products supporting the maintenance of the correct level of lipids in the blood. It is also indicated in metabolic disorders and for the detoxification of the body. The use of birch is recommended for anemia and digestive problems. Birch bark (betulin contained in it) is used in products treating acne. Birch fungus is used to support the immune system, especially in antiviral therapy. Cosmetics containing birch have a cleansing and caring effect on hair and skin – they are used in anti-allergic and anti-dandruff indications.

Action, properties, composition

The main components contained in birch leaves include flavonol glycosides (hyperoside, 3-D-digalactoside of myricetin), the concentration of which is up to 2.5%. Another component, which occurs mainly in young leaves, is essential oil. In addition, birch contains: tannins, sesquiterpenes, polyprenol compounds, triterpenes, saponins, resin, mineral salts, vitamin C and K. Additionally, birch bark contains betulin and betuloside.

Birch is characterized by diuretic and bactericidal effects – it is often used for urinary tract infections, urination disorders and as a means of supporting the proper functioning of the kidneys. Diuretic properties lead to increased excretion of sodium and chlorine, as well as toxic metabolic products. Birch also has a choleretic effect and supports the functioning of liver cells. Birch extract also has a slight diaphoretic and anti-rheumatic effect. Birch also has disinfectant and soothing properties. Used in external preparations for the skin, it has an anti-dandruff and moisturizing effect. Birch bracket extract stimulates the secretion of interferon, supporting the body’s antiviral response.

Side effects, overdose

When using birch, digestive problems such as nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting may occur. An allergic reaction manifesting as a rash, hives, itching, and allergic rhinitis may also be a side effect of birch preparations.

You should stop using birch products and consult your doctor if symptoms persist or blood appears in your urine.

There have been no reports of overdose with products containing birch.
