L-cysteine derivative
N-acetylcysteine is a derivative of L-cysteine, an endogenous amino acid found in many proteins in the human body.[1] L-cysteine is classified as a sulfur amino acid and is a component of glutathione.[2]
What is glutathione?
Glutathione is a water-soluble tripeptide. Under physiological conditions, glutathione is synthesized from cysteine, methionine, and glutamate, which are supplied with food. [4] The highest concentration of glutathione is found in the liver, which plays an important role in its synthesis. [3,4] Its amount in the body’s tissues and cells may change with age. [4]
Glutathione precursor
Orally administered NAC is readily absorbed in the stomach (influenced by the low pH of the stomach) and intestines. It is then transported to the liver via the portal tract, where it is almost completely converted to cysteine. The liver incorporates most of the cysteine into glutathione, which is then largely secreted into the circulatory system. [2]
