Guarana, the precious Brazilian plant treasure
Guarana is a plant that occurs naturally in South America, mainly in Brazil in the Amazon basin. Its cultivation was initiated by the Sateré-Mawé Indians, and is currently grown in Brazil, mainly in the states of Amazonas and Bahia, from where 95% of all Brazilian guarana is obtained. The active compounds in guarana are alkaloids: caffeine, theophylline, theobromine, tannins and saponins. According to available information, guarana contains a greater amount of caffeine than most plants (3.6% to 5.8% caffeine compared to coffee, where this content is 1% to 2%). Considering the high caffeine content in guarana, it seems reasonable to attribute to it the biological properties of purine alkaloids, which is precisely one of them.

The properties of guarana were already known to the Indians.
And various available scientific sources indicate that it could have been cultivated by them even before Columbus discovered America. The main compound responsible for the effects of guarana is caffeine. And did you know that the Indians used guarana during long and exhausting hunts because of its stimulating properties? They also treated it as support for intensive physical effort and mental stress. Currently, guarana is recognized for its adaptogenic effects, stimulating the central nervous system and supporting memory and concentration. It can also help in states of fatigue.
The popularity of guarana
Guarana seed extracts have become increasingly popular around the world over the past few decades, mainly due to their stimulating and thermogenic effects. They are included not only in single-ingredient products, but also as ingredients in many herbal formulas, energy drinks, and protein bars. There is a wealth of research on guarana, including its stimulating and cognitive properties. According to a 2013 scientific publication (Silvestrini et al.), some studies have shown, for example, that guarana affects cognitive ability parameters without affecting mood, improves secondary memory performance, and increases alertness and the speed and accuracy of performing rapid visual information processing tasks, as well as relieving mental fatigue associated with performing extended tasks.
