Indications

Starazolin is a medicinal product for use in eye inflammation accompanied by swelling, hyperemia, burning, and tearing.

Composition:

The active substance is: tetryzoline (Tetryzolini hydrochloridum).

1 ml of drops contains 0.5 mg of tetryzoline hydrochloride.

Excipients: sodium chloride, disodium edetate, benzalkonium chloride, sodium tetraborate, boric acid, highly purified water.

Indications:

  • Symptomatic treatment of, among others, inflammatory changes (with accompanying swelling and hyperemia) caused by external factors (smoke, dust, lenses, bright light, wind, cosmetics, chlorinated water),
  • Symptomatic treatment of allergic inflammations such as hay fever, grass pollen allergy,
  • Relief of symptoms such as burning, itching, soreness, excessive tearing and eye irritation.

Comments:

Do not use in children under 2 years of age.

There is no data to suggest that  Starazolin has a direct effect  on the ability to drive or operate machinery. It should be taken into account that conjunctivitis, dilated pupils and blurred vision may affect the above-mentioned activities.

Properties:

Starazolin contains tetryzoline, which affects small blood vessels (shrinks them), which reduces congestion and swelling. Tetryzoline is a sympathomimetic amine.

Dosage:

Always use this medicine exactly as described in the package leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

  • A drug for local application to the conjunctival sac.
  • Drops should not be used long-term, especially in children.
  • When using the medicine, avoid contact of the dropper with the skin or other surfaces – the drops are a sterile solution.
  • If the patient wears lenses, they should be removed before application and reinserted 15 minutes after administration.

Children over 2 years of age, adolescents and adults: 1-2 drops, 2-3 times a day.

Use with other medications:

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all the medicines you are taking, have recently taken or might take, including medicines obtained without a prescription.

Starazolin may interact with:

  • MAO inhibitors, TCAs, reserprine,
  • insulin, atropine, anesthetics.

Contraindications:

When not to use Starazolin:

  • in case of hypersensitivity to the active substance – tetryzoline hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients of this medicine,
  • in people with diagnosed glaucoma, especially narrow-angle glaucoma, or other severe eye diseases,
  • in persons under 2 years of age,
  • in women during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Side effects:

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Common side effects (affects 1 to 10 people in 100):

  • systemic effects – headaches, palpitations, weakness, excessive sweating, increased blood pressure, tremors,
  • reactive hyperaemia, burning of mucous membranes, dryness of mucous membranes.

Very rare side effects (affecting less than 1 in 10,000 people):

  • conjunctival hyperkeratosis with closure of the lacrimal puncta and excessive tearing.

Warnings:

  • If symptoms of inflammation worsen, consult your doctor.
  • The drug is not recommended for use in cases of infections, corneal damage, or severe pain.
  • If there is no improvement after 2 days of using Starazolin, consult your doctor.
  • The drug should be used with caution in cases of severe circulatory system diseases (coronary heart disease, hypertension), pheochromocytoma, diabetes, hyperthyroidism.
  • Use this medicine with caution if you are taking MAO inhibitors or other medicines that may increase blood pressure.
  • The medicine contains benzalkonium chloride, which may cause eye irritation. Avoid contact with contact lenses. It is recommended to wait 15 minutes between applying the drops and putting them back in.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you experience: severe eye pain, headache, loss of vision.
  • This drug is not effective in case of delayed allergic reactions – contact conjunctivitis and eyelid dermatitis.
  • After first opening the bottle, the medicine should be used within 28 days.

Taking during pregnancy:

The use of this medicine during pregnancy and breastfeeding is contraindicated.
