Wild Rose – what is it?

The wild rose is a thorny shrub from the Rosaceae family. In Poland, there are twenty-three species of roses out of nearly 1,400. Each variety is unique. They differ, among other things, in the color of the flowers, from amaranth to white, but also in the shape and color of the fruit. Among others, we can distinguish:

wrinkled rose ((Rosa rugosa Thbg),

rusty rose (Rosa rubiginosa L.),

damask rose (Rosa damascena Mill.),

French rose (Rosa gallica),

centifolia rose (Rosa centifolia L.).

Of the last three, the most common way to obtain oil is from the petals. The last two species are used to make aromatic rose jam. They are also known as an ingredient in teas. The centifolia rose is one of the most fragrant. Rose petals and flowers, due to their high content of beneficial substances, are widely used in both pharmacy and cosmetics. The composition of wild rose fruits includes, among others:

Vitamin C, which is 30 to 40 times more than in citrus fruits,

B vitamins such as B1 and B2, but also fat-soluble vitamins such as A, E, K,

Folic acid, especially important for pregnant women,

Carotenoids,

Flavonoids,

Organic acids,

Tannins,

Pectin.

Red and juicy rosehips – szupinki – are collected in autumn, fully ripe, and dried in a drying room at a temperature of 50 degrees Celsius. Preparations containing rosehips are used, among others, in the treatment of hypertension. Additionally, people suffering from diseases of the cardiovascular system and liver should be interested in it. They have a strengthening and anti-inflammatory effect, help with inflammations of the digestive tract, and due to the very high content of vitamin C, they protect against scurvy.

When it comes to rose flowers, their composition is slightly different from that of the fruit. In them, one can distinguish compounds from the group:

flavonoids,

anthocyanins,

tannins,

essential oils.

They are used primarily to treat indigestion and sore throats. An infusion of rose petals can be used to wash the face to refresh the complexion.
