Nurofen for children in the form of suppositories is an analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory drug belonging to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Nurofen for Children suppositories are a good solution when a child cannot take medication orally, for example during vomiting. These suppositories should be given to children over 2 years of age and weighing more than 12.5 kg.

How to dose and use Nurofen suppositories for children?

Before use, read the leaflet, which contains indications, contraindications, data on adverse effects and dosage, and information on the use of the medicinal product, or consult a doctor or pharmacist, as any drug used improperly may threaten your life or health.

Nurofen for children suppositories are administered at a dose of 20 mg to 30 mg per kilogram of body weight in 3 to 4 divided doses according to the following dosing schedule:

  • For children weighing 12.5 kg to 17 kg (2 to 4 years): starting dose is 1 suppository. If necessary, 1 suppository after 6 to 8 hours. Do not use more than 3 suppositories (375 mg ibuprofen) in 24 hours.
  • For children weighing 17 kg to 20.5 kg (4 to 6 years): starting dose is 1 suppository. If necessary, 1 suppository after 6 hours. Do not use more than 4 suppositories (500 mg ibuprofen) in 24 hours.
  • The medicine should not be used in children weighing less than 12.5 kg because products containing lower ibuprofen content are recommended for these children.
  • Patients with kidney or liver problems should consult a doctor before using Nurofen for Children.
  • For infants aged 3-5 months, consult a doctor if symptoms worsen or do not improve after 24 hours.
  • In children over 6 months of age, consult a doctor if this medicine is required for more than 3 days or if symptoms worsen.
  • If, despite taking the medicine, the fever and pain do not subside or get worse, contact your doctor.
  • Apply rectally.
  • The suppository should be removed from the aluminum blister and inserted into the rectum, preferably after the child has previously defecated. To make the suppository more moist, you can warm it in your hand or dip it briefly in warm water.

The lowest effective dose should be used for the shortest time necessary to relieve symptoms. If symptoms of infection (such as fever and pain) persist or worsen, consult a doctor immediately. If you have any concerns about the use of Nurofen for children, contact your doctor.

What are the contraindications to the use of Nurofen for children?

  • if you are allergic to ibuprofen, other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or any of the other ingredients;
  • if you have had hypersensitivity reactions (e.g. bronchospasm, asthma, rhinitis or hives) after taking ibuprofen, acetylsalicylic acid or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs;
  • if you have or have had a stomach or duodenal ulcer or gastrointestinal bleeding (two or more distinct episodes of proven ulceration or bleeding);
  • if you have severe liver or kidney failure or uncontrolled heart failure;
  • if you are in the last trimester of pregnancy.
