Iceland moss – what is it?

Despite its name, which refers to Iceland, this lichen is native to cold and mountainous areas of Europe (stretching from Iceland to Spain). It also reproduced in North America. It grows in damp and cool places near marshes, heaths and forests. It prefers acidic soils. In the north, it grows in open areas, while in the south it appears in shady areas. The reference to Iceland is not because it comes from this region, but rather because in the past, this lichen was used exclusively as food on the island. It was collected at night or when it rained and macerated to eliminate its bitterness.

Iceland moss is classified as a group of organisms that originated from the symbiosis of a fungus with algae or cyanobacteria. It can be 2.5 to 10 cm tall, although the average is 5 to 6 cm. It consists of a vegetative body that can have a wide range of colors: from dark green, brownish-gray with reddish shades to white. It forms flattened, ribbed, divided and irregularly shaped or serrated leaves with cilia. It has a rubbery and leather-like texture.

Iceland moss – properties

Iceland moss has a high content of folic acid, polysaccharides, zinc and B vitamins. In addition, it is rich in a mucous substance with a viscous consistency, which can create a shield in the body, similar to those created by the body’s own mucous membranes. This moss also contains other active microelements. Thanks to all these ingredients:

  • supports anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial effects;
  • accelerates wound healing;
  • supports the immune system in the fight against disease;
  • intensifies anti-aging and antioxidant properties;
  • accelerates the regeneration of damaged tissues;
  • helps regulate the functioning of the digestive system;
  • supports cancer prevention.

In what situations should you consume Iceland moss?

It is worth considering consuming Iceland moss in the following situations:

  • gastroenteritis;
  • weakening of the immune system, including infectious diseases;
  • runny nose and acute respiratory infections (asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, flu);
  • abnormal functioning of the thyroid gland;
  • vomiting;
  • decreased appetite;
  • constipation;
  • insomnia;
  • motion sickness;
  • decreased or stopped urine output;
  • burns, ulcers, psoriasis and various skin rashes.

Iceland moss syrup for cough

In pharmacies, you can find Icelandic lichen syrup, which is commonly consumed in the case of dry cough, hoarseness and throat irritation. The ingredients of such a product support expectoration, eliminating bacteria and inflammation. The syrup can be drunk for bronchitis and laryngitis, when there is a large load on the vocal cords.

Those who do not like liquid dietary supplements can use the available capsules. Iceland moss in this form contributes to maintaining the health of the respiratory tract. It helps to moisturize the mucous membrane of the throat and strengthen the immune system. The ingredients of Iceland moss capsules support the relief of inflammation of the throat, trachea and larynx.

When to watch out for Iceland moss?

Iceland moss is non-toxic and does not cause allergic reactions. Iceland moss supplements can be consumed by children and adults. The only exceptions may be autoimmune disease, pregnancy, acute gastritis and ulcers, and taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. In these cases, consult a doctor or pharmacist before using the lichen.
