Hawthorn ā properties:
Ingredients with health benefits are hidden primarily in hawthorn flowers. They include amines, phytosterols, phenolic acids, tannins, vitamins B and C, pectins and mineral salts, as well as a wealth of procyanidins and flavonoids, which have a positive effect on the intestines (they have a relaxing effect on their smooth muscles), blood vessels, urinary tract and uterus. They also have a positive effect on coronary vessels, causing an increase in the flow of oxygenated blood to the heart muscle and thus providing relief from pain and possible shortness of breath.
Procyanidins help lower blood pressure. The substances contained in hawthorn flowers also increase the power of heart contractions and slow down their frequency, making it work more efficiently. They also improve the functioning of blood vessels in the brain. Thanks to the high content of vitamin C, hawthorn strengthens the body’s immunity and effectively supports it in fighting infections or colds.
Hawthorn is also rich in vitamin PP, which takes part in the metabolism of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and also maintains the epithelium of the skin, the digestive tract, and the nervous system in good condition. Importantly, by dilating blood vessels, vitamin PP stimulates brain function.
Hawthorn fruit also has health benefits, but it contains fewer beneficial ingredients than flowers. However, it contains pectin, a soluble fiber that supports intestinal peristalsis and regulates the defecation process. This can indirectly affect the weight loss process. Because fiber swells in the intestine, binding water and by increasing its volume, it makes us feel full faster after eating a product rich in it. Of course, hawthorn will not directly make us lose weight, but in combination with a proper diet and physical exercise, it can contribute to the weight loss process.
Hawthorn for the heart
Hawthorn flowers and fruits can be found in many preparations intended to regulate blood pressure, circulation and heart function – these may be, for example, hawthorn capsules.
Flavonoids contained in hawthorn may inhibit the activity of angiotensin-converting enzyme ā this effect is responsible for the lowering of blood pressure by hawthorn. Additionally, studies provide evidence of hawthornās antiplatelet, anti-aggregation effect, which may be particularly important in coronary artery disease and atherosclerosis.
However, hawthorn may have an even greater effect in the context of reducing hypercholesterolemia and generally improving the lipid profile. Studies have shown that the use of hawthorn reduces the concentration of LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, without affecting the reduction of “good” HDL cholesterol. This may translate into a lower risk of atherosclerosis, and further – improvement in the functioning of the cardiovascular system.
The use of hawthorn in various forms, but especially hawthorn tincture, has been summarized by scientists as one of the supportive solutions to reduce the effects of a high-fat diet.
Hawthorn flower ā use:
Not only does hawthorn have a good effect on the heart, but also on other health aspects. For example, drinking hawthorn juice is especially recommended in states of reduced immunity.
Hawthorn is also recommended for people who have trouble sleeping and chronic stress – then, in addition to the above-mentioned properties, the substances contained in hawthorn also have a positive effect on mental well-being – they help get rid of persistent insomnia and headaches. In such situations, a tea containing hawthorn extract may be a good choice.
Due to its immunomodulating properties, hawthorn (for example, hawthorn tea) can be helpful for colds. The flavonoids present in hawthorn fruit reduce inflammation, and the presence of sitosterols increases the number and activity of immune system cells. Additionally, it has been shown that hawthorn can have antimicrobial properties, for example in relation to (pathogenic) bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Streptococcus pyogenes, Micrococcus flavus, Bacillus subtilis, Lysteria monocytogenes and Shigella flexener. Hawthorn extract can also have a destructive effect on fungi, these are microorganisms in particular such as: Trichophyton longifusus, Aspergillus flavus, Microspoum canis and Fusarium solani.
Hawthorn in pregnancy
There are many herbal raw materials that should be limited or completely eliminated during pregnancy. In principle, unless they are prescribed by your doctor, no herbal remedies should be used during pregnancy or lactation on your own. The same is true for hawthorn during pregnancy, and while breastfeeding, there are no strict contraindications to its use. However, this issue still requires further research. Some suggest that hawthorn during pregnancy may relax the uterine muscles too much and thus increase the risk of miscarriage.
Hawthorn ā contraindications:
Hawthorn is very mild in action and can usually be used long-term without side effects. People struggling with low blood pressure should approach it with caution, and it is also not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, as previously mentioned.
Hawthorn – side effects:
Although hawthorn is a herbal remedy, its effect on the body is of great importance. Therefore, hawthorn can be found in many pharmacy products and herbal remedies aimed at improving health. However, one should be especially careful about its effect on lowering blood pressure. In people with already low blood pressure values, using hawthorn can lead to its dangerous decrease and fainting, weakness. Also in diseases related to the heart muscle and when using individually selected drugs for cardiovascular problems, the desire to use hawthorn should be discussed first with the attending physician.
