Evening primrose – what are its properties?
The raw material used in phytotherapy and cosmetics is evening primrose oil. However, it is extremely important that it must contain a strictly defined composition – no less than 73.5% linoleic acid (LA) and 9% gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). The plant is relatively easy to obtain, because it grows in native fields and meadows. It can be found all over the world except Antarctica. It blooms from June to August and reaches up to 100 cm in height.
Evening primrose seeds contain:
essential unsaturated fatty acids (EFAs) – gamma-linolenic and linolenic acids. Both of these acids are widely used to support the treatment of many diseases, including rheumatic diseases, and also as substances that accelerate metabolism,
plant phytosterols – reduce the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine,
polyphenols – have antioxidant properties, helping to neutralize free radicals that accelerate cell ageing processes,
triglycerides – are essential for the proper functioning of the muscular system,
minerals – including zinc, calcium, selenium, manganese and phosphorus,
Vitamins E and F – Vitamin E is often called the “vitamin of youth” because it has anti-aging properties and additionally supports the functioning of the immune system and limits the accumulation of fat in the body. Vitamin F significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, heart attacks and strokes.
Evening primrose – action and indications for use
Evening primrose seeds are recommended primarily for people who want to maintain a slim figure and support the functioning of the cardiovascular system. Active ingredients contained in the raw material:
lower blood pressure,
they support the treatment of diabetes by lowering glucose levels,
reduce the absorption of so-called bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides,
regulate metabolism,
strengthen the body in cases of chronic weakness,
reduce the risk of blood clots,
have a soothing effect in case of painful menstruation,
moisturize and regenerate the epidermis.
Evening Primrose for Vessels and the Heart
Preparations based on evening primrose, thanks to the presence of a large amount of EFAs in their composition, not only effectively reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood, but also blood pressure. Thanks to this, the risk of atherosclerotic plaques in the arteries and veins is significantly reduced. The consequence of such action is a reduction in the risk of strokes and heart attacks, which are the main cause of death in Poland.
Evening primrose for the nervous system
Medicinal products with evening primrose in their composition support the treatment of many psychiatric diseases, including depression and anxiety. The fatty acids present in the oil from the seeds of this plant improve the functioning of neurons, which can contribute to the improvement of concentration and have a positive effect on memory. The raw material is also used to support the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy, migraines and multiple sclerosis (an autoimmune disease).
Evening primrose for the digestive system
Evening primrose seeds support the absorption of many nutrients and vitamins (A, D, E and K). It is also known for its properties to alleviate symptoms of intestinal inflammation and diarrhea. It is also worth mentioning that this raw material supports the physiological functioning of the liver and protects this organ from fat accumulation.
Evening primrose – contraindications to use
It is not recommended to use evening primrose preparations in children and adolescents under 12 years of age. It should not be taken by people with blood clotting disorders. Those taking medications for cardiovascular diseases on a regular basis, pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult the possibility of taking such preparations with their doctor.
