What is Afrin ND 0.5 mg/ml?
Afrin ND is a nasal spray containing the active substance oxymetazoline hydrochloride.
Afrin ND is a decongestant that relieves nasal congestion by narrowing the blood vessels in the nose. It starts working within minutes and the effect lasts for hours.
When to use Afrin ND 0.5 mg/ml
AfrinND is used to treat the symptoms of nasal congestion caused by hay fever, colds and sinusitis. The medicine is applied every 12 hours.
If after 7 days there is no improvement or the patient feels worse, contact your doctor.

Composition

How to dose Afrin ND 0.5 mg/ml?
Dosage:
- Adults: 1-2 sprays into each nostril every 12 hours.
- Children > 10 years of age: 1-2 sprays into each nostril every 12 hours. Children 6-10 years of age: 1 spray into each nostril every 12 hours.
In adults, do not use more than 8 sprays (in children, no more than 4 sprays) in 24 hours. Do not exceed the recommended dosage.
Afrin ND should not be used for longer than 7 days, unless directed by a doctor. The product may be re-administered after a break of several days.
Method of administration:
Shake before use. Before first use, prepare the sprayer for use by pressing the pump several times until the first full spray appears. Holding the dispenser in a vertical position, insert its tip into each nostril in turn, press the can firmly once or twice while inhaling through the nose.
Use of the drug in children and adolescents
Afrin ND should not be used in children under 6 years of age.
When should you not take Afrin ND 0.5 mg/ml?
- If you are allergic to oxymetazoline hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients of this medicine,
- if you are being treated with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO inhibitors, medicines used to treat Parkinson’s disease and depression). Monoamine oxidase inhibitors may enhance the increase in blood pressure induced by oxymetazoline;
- if you suffer from narrow-angle glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye),
- in a patient after transsphenoidal removal of the pituitary gland (surgical removal of the pituitary gland),
- if you suffer from inflammation of the skin and mucous membrane of the nasal vestibule with the formation of crusts (dry atrophic rhinitis),
- if you suffer from acute coronary artery disease and left ventricular heart failure (“cardiac asthma”).
Notes on use
Afrin ND contains benzalkonium chloride and benzyl alcohol.
Benzalkonium chloride (a preservative) may cause irritation or swelling inside the nose, especially if used for a long time.
Benzyl alcohol may cause allergic reactions.
