What is Otrivin?
Otrivin nasal spray is a locally acting drug that, by constricting blood vessels , reduces congestion and swelling of the nasal mucosa and the amount of discharge.
The active substance of Otrivin is xylometazoline hydrochloride. Otrivin makes nasal breathing easier for patients with a stuffy nose. The special composition of Otrivin nasal spray (moisturizing substances) prevents drying and irritation of the nasal mucosa.
Otrivin starts working within 2 minutes and lasts up to twelve hours. Otrivin nasal spray is indicated for use in adults and adolescents over 12 years of age.
Indications
Excessive nasal congestion occurring during colds, hay fever, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis. The drug facilitates the outflow of secretions from inflamed paranasal sinuses. By reducing the congestion of the nasopharyngeal mucosa, it can be used as an adjunct in otitis media. Otrivin facilitates nasal endoscopy (examination of the nasal cavity).

Composition of Otrivin
One ml of solution contains | 1 mg xylometazoline hydrochloride. |
The other ingredients are: benzalkonium chloride, disodium edetate, sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate, disodium phosphate dodecahydrate, sodium chloride, sorbitol 70%, hypromellose 4000, purified water. |
How to use Otrivin?
Always use this medicine exactly as described in the package leaflet or as your doctor has told you. If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Otrivin should only be used in the nose (also for otitis media).
To avoid spreading infection, one pack of the medicine should only be used by one patient.
Adults and adolescents over 12 years of age:
1 dose of Otrivin spray in each nostril 3 times a day.
Do not use more than 3 times a day. It is recommended to take the last dose immediately before going to bed.
Do not use for longer than 10 consecutive days.
Otrivin should not be used in children under 12 years of age.

When not to use Otrivin?
- If you are allergic to xylometazoline hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients of this medicine,
- if you have had surgery performed through the nose, e.g. removal of the pituitary gland or surgery involving exposure of the dura mater (brain surgery performed through the nose or mouth),
- if you have narrow-angle glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye),
- if you have very dry nasal mucosa (rhinitis sicca or atrophic rhinitis).
