Ylang Ylang Oil 100% Nanga Essential Oil
Ylang-ylang essential oil is obtained from the large, fragrant flowers of the tropical tree Cananga odorata, or fragrant ylang-ylang. Cananga oil is obtained from the same species, but from a different variety. Ylang-ylang comes from the genuina variety, and cananga from the macrophylla variety. Both oils are obtained from flowers. They differ in scent and properties [1].
Ylang-ylang is said to mean “flower of all flowers”. This translation is incorrect, although widespread. The name of this plant comes from Tagalog – one of the languages of the Filipino people, in which the word ilang means “wilderness” or “desert” and refers to the natural habitat of the ylang ylang tree [2].
The tree grows wild in Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Malaysia, northeastern Australia, and Madagascar. It is also widely cultivated in subtropical countries and intensively exploited for its valuable essential oil, which is desired worldwide. It is used in perfumery, cosmetics, and aromatherapy. It is an ingredient in the most famous perfumes, such as Chanel No. 5 and Coco Mademoiselle [3, 4].
Ylang ylang flowers are picked at sunrise, because that’s when their scent is strongest. Then they undergo four steam distillation. The first distillation produces the most exquisite oil: ylang ylang extra. This is the one used in the production of the best perfumes (and you can buy this one in our shop :) Each subsequent distillation produces slightly less oil and its quality gradually decreases. The cheaper ylang ylang oil is used in inexpensive perfumes and cosmetics, which contain many different aromas [4].
The use of ylang ylang oil in perfumes dates back to the 19th century, but its scent has been valued for thousands of years. The ylang ylang tree also plays a role in traditional medicine among the indigenous people of India, the Indochina and Malay Peninsulas, and the Pacific Islands. The inhabitants of these regions use not only the flowers and oil, but also the leaves and bark of the ylang tree. The oil is commonly used there as a sedative, relaxing, and antidepressant. Additionally, in Indonesia it is used as an aphrodisiac, which increases the pleasure felt during sex. In India, on the other hand, it is a remedy for headaches and eye inflammation. Fresh ylang ylang flowers are used by the inhabitants of the Pacific Islands to treat asthma and pneumonia. They are also added to coconut oil intended for lomi lomi massage, which increases its health-promoting value and creates a wonderfully fragrant mixture. Dried flowers are used in Java for malaria and fever [5].
For the curious – in Polynesia, crushed leaves of the ylang-ylang tree are used as an anti-dandruff and anti-itch agent. The bark is used to prepare a decoction to alleviate gastrointestinal ailments [5].
