Egyptian Amine – Use and Indications

The healing properties of Egyptian amine were valued already in ancient Egypt. Due to its antispasmodic effect, the plant was used for intestinal problems, among women suffering from menstrual pain, in the case of upper respiratory tract inflammations with shortness of breath and in diseases of the urinary tract.

In herbal medicine, the positive effect of Ammi visnaga on the cardiovascular system is valued.  Ammi visnaga fruits dilate coronary vessels and improve blood supply to the heart muscle.  They are traditionally used in conditions before and after myocardial infarction and in coronary insufficiency and angina pectoris.

In addition,  they have a spasmolytic effect on the smooth muscles of the blood vessels of the kidneys.  This increases the efficiency of the kidneys and facilitates the washing out of kidney sand.

Aminek is helpful in mild forms of prostate hyperplasia in men. In respiratory tract infections, decoctions of the plant’s fruits prevent the occurrence of spasms of the bronchial tree. In folk medicine, a tincture of Egyptian amine was used.

Egyptian Amine – action, properties, composition

Active substances contained in the fruit of Ammi visnagae fructus are pyranocoumarins (visnadin, samidin and dihydrosamidin), furanochromenone derivatives such as khellin (0.3-12.2%) and visnagine (0.05-0.30%), samidin compounds, glycosides (khellinin, kelinol), flavonoids (acacetin, quercetin, rhamnetin, isorhamnetin and rhamnasin), essential oils (approx. 0.1-0.2%; 21 identified components including 2,2-dimethylbutanoic acid, isobutyl isobutyrate, linalool, bornyl acetate, thymol) and phenolic acids (e.g. caffeic acid).

The raw material has a spasmolytic effect on the smooth muscles of the coronary vessels (increased coronary blood flow), while increasing the stroke volume of the heart muscle and causing a positive inotropic effect.  Studies on laboratory animals with visnadin have shown the substance’s ability to selectively inhibit the contractile activity of the aortic and portal vein muscles. Intravenous administration of visnadin resulted in a decrease in blood pressure without affecting the heart rate (pulse). Keline isolated from the fruit improved the blood supply to the heart muscle and improved its metabolism (animal studies). It was also administered to patients suffering from angina pectoris attacks and people with diagnosed coronary atherosclerosis. A clinical study confirmed the effectiveness of the substance in preventing angina pectoris attacks, but no effect of keline on the lipid profile was demonstrated. Other studies suggest an increase in the amount of HDL cholesterol with no change in the concentration of triglycerides and LDL cholesterol under the influence of keline. This requires further research.

Pyranocoumarin and furanochromenone derivatives  have a relaxing effect in mild spastic conditions of the respiratory tract, hence their traditional use in asthma and bronchitis. The mechanism of action of these substances is most likely based on the inhibition of the phosphodiesterase enzyme. In addition, the relaxing effect of aqueous and ethanol extracts of Ammi visnaga on the smooth muscles of the ureters has been proven. Studies on laboratory animals have shown a protective effect of khellin and visnagin against the formation of calcium oxalate crystals in the urinary tract of rats.

The chelline contained in the fruit of the Egyptian amine affects the repigmentation of the skin of people affected by vitiligo in combination with UV radiation.  This effect has been proven for both the substance administered orally and applied to the skin in the form of a gel. The fruit of the Egyptian amine shows some antioxidant capacity (studies on the butanol extract of Ammi visnaga).

Egyptian Amine – Use and Dosage

The fruits of the Egyptian amine are part of a medicinal preparation used traditionally as a diuretic.  Oral fluid is indicated in diseases of the urinary tract, in kidney stones with small deposits (so-called kidney sand).  In the given indications, the drug is taken for a period of 7 to 14 days. After this time, consultation with a doctor is necessary.

Due to lack of research,  it is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women or persons under 12 years of age.

Egyptian Amine – side effects, overdose

Egyptian Amine is a plant with proven photosensitizing properties.  During the treatment, it is advisable to avoid exposure to UV radiation (sunbathing, solarium).

Keline has been proven to stimulate the uterine musculature, hence Egyptian amine is not recommended for pregnant women.

High doses of the raw material may cause increased levels of liver enzymes and liver damage.

Long-term use of high doses of the plant results in gastrointestinal disorders (nausea, constipation, lack of appetite), dizziness and sleep problems.
