What is turmeric?
Turmeric (other names: turmeric, Indian saffron) is a spice with a strong, slightly bitter taste, originating from India. The most important components of turmeric include curcumin, thanks to which turmeric gains its typical, characteristic color. Turmeric can be cultivated primarily in Asian countries, including China, Vietnam and India. In Polish stores, you can buy turmeric in almost every spice section. It is great for seasoning oriental dishes.
Turmeric – properties
Are you wondering what turmeric is good for? It turns out that the list of health properties of turmeric is quite long. First of all, it has antibacterial and antiviral properties. The curcumin contained in turmeric fights fungi and can protect against inflammation, but it is worth noting that the human body has difficulty absorbing it orally. What else does turmeric do? The curcumin present in it, as a polyphenol, has antioxidant properties. In addition, turmeric can lower cholesterol and glucose levels and supports the digestive system, especially in the case of stomach problems.
Turmeric – action
You already know what turmeric is good for, but that’s not the end of its positive effects on the human body. Turmeric has a liver-protecting effect, contains quite a lot of iron, can help with colds and supports immunity. What else does turmeric give you? As mentioned above, turmeric contains curcumin – a strong antioxidant, so it helps fight the effects of free radicals, the excess of which can unfortunately accelerate the aging process. That’s why the balance between antioxidants (antioxidants) and free radicals is so important.
Turmeric – contraindications
Do not overdo it with the dosage of turmeric. Do not exceed the daily recommended portion of this spice for consumption. Remember that turmeric is not recommended during pregnancy, because its frequent use can cause uterine contractions. In addition, turmeric should not be used by, among others, people suffering from type 1 diabetes or, when using antidiabetic drugs, consult the use of turmeric with a doctor, because its properties can intensify the effects of these drugs. The same applies, for example, to people using anticoagulants.
Turmeric – side effects
If you exceed the permissible dose of consumption, you can expect, for example, digestive problems in the form of troublesome diarrhea. Do not forget that if diarrhea lasts for a longer period of time, it can unfortunately lead to dangerous dehydration of the body. The conclusion? Moderation! Yes, turmeric, or turmeric long, has a wide range of uses and can have a positive effect on many aspects of the functioning of the human body, but if you overdo it, the side effects can be troublesome.
