Sabalow firearm – what is it?

Saw palmetto, or Serenoa repens, is a plant native to the United States, Central, North and South America, and the West Indies. In the States, it can be found primarily in the marshy areas of Florida, North Carolina, Texas and Alabama. The purple-black fruits growing in clusters are used for medicinal purposes. These, partially dried, are the basis for extracts.

Saw palmetto is primarily a source of phytosterols, fatty acids, polysaccharides, lectins and fatty oil.

Saw palmetto itself has been used for medicinal purposes since the early 19th century. The first known records mention its use by Native Americans who inhabited the Florida region. They used the plant as a remedy for prostate enlargement, swelling and atrophy of the testicles, and as a method for erectile dysfunction. Saw palmetto was officially introduced to the market in 1926, but a quarter of a century later it was withdrawn due to unconfirmed medicinal properties. Research on saw palmetto was finally resumed in the 1980s.

Saw palmetto – action and use

The effect of saw palmetto on the prostate has already been confirmed, but there is still no definitive confirmation of the mechanism by which this plant works. It is believed that the extract from its fruit reduces the activity of 5-α-reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone into 5-alphadihydrotestosterone (DHT). This is a hormone that binds to receptors in the nucleus of prostate cells, which leads to increased growth and cell division. This same hormone is the cause of poor well-being in mature men. Its effect on the prostate gland leads to pressure on the bladder and constriction of the urethra. This results in more frequent and at the same time more difficult urination, constant pressure on the bladder and lower abdominal pain. Uncontrolled hypertrophy can eventually lead to complete blockage of the urethra.

Saw palmetto is rich in lipid-sterol compounds. It contains triglycerides and phytosterols, which are suspected of having an effect on prostate enlargement. Phytosterols also limit the absorption of cholesterol in the digestive tract. From cholesterol, testosterone is produced, which is then converted into DHT. All this leads to a vicious circle.

Saw palmetto is not just a plant for men . Women can also benefit from its properties. DHT is one of the causes of androgenic alopecia. The sebaceous glands also contain 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT, and its high levels are responsible for hair loss. This hormone leads to miniaturization of hair follicles, which has a direct impact on the shortening of hair lifespan and its poor production. Although this type of baldness mainly affects men and manifests itself in hair loss on the top of the head and at the base of the forehead, it can also affect women, especially in hormonal disorders and a decrease in female hormones after pregnancy or during menopause.

Thanks to saw palmetto, the activity of 5-alpha-reductase is inhibited, and thus  the influence of DHT on the body is reduced . For this reason, this plant is often found in medications or dietary supplements for baldness, and is also an ingredient in hair care cosmetics: shampoos, masks and conditioners.

Saw Palmetto – Contraindications and Side Effects

Although saw palmetto is found as an ingredient in hair care cosmetics, it is also taken orally. However, not everyone can undertake treatment with it. The most important contraindications to the use of saw palmetto include pregnancy, breastfeeding, and taking birth control pills. People with planned surgical procedures should also not use saw palmetto two weeks before the planned procedure or surgery.

Oral ingestion of saw palmetto may be associated with side effects . The most common include: dizziness, nausea and vomiting, headache, diarrhea, heavy periods, decreased blood clotting, bruising and bleeding from the mouth. However, when used properly, saw palmetto can bring many health benefits. It is not without reason that it is a mandatory ingredient in the only herbal supplements supporting the treatment of prostate gland enlargement. It can alleviate particularly troublesome ailments in men.
