Rhodiola rosea, often called the “golden root”, belongs to the genus Rhodiola, which has over 200 species, of which about 20 are used in Eastern medicine. These are rhizomatous, perennial plants, the main area of distribution of which is the northern hemisphere, mainly Asia and Europe. Rhodiola rosea is also cultivated in Poland. The active ingredients contained in it are primarily plant polyphenols: phytosterols, flavonoids, phenolic acids, catechins, proanthocyanidins, as well as phenylpropanoids and phenylethyl derivatives. The main active compounds from the group of phenylethyl derivatives are p-tyrosol and salidrosides. The amount of salidrosides and rosavins is given in the preparations as the main active substances.
Due to the numerous biologically active compounds contained in Rhodiola rosea, it has anti-inflammatory, antidepressant, adaptogenic, antiviral and antibacterial properties. It has a beneficial effect on the nervous system, circulatory system and liver. In addition, it can support immunity by increasing the number of T-regulatory lymphocytes and reducing the production of interferon gamma.
Rhodiola rosea – use
Rhodiola rosea can positively influence our health in many areas by:
- adaptogenic effect
- increase in serotonin levels
- relieving symptoms of stress
- immunostimulating effect
- anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect
- improving physical endurance
- antioxidant activity
Particular attention is paid to the adaptogenic effect of Rhodiola rosea. By normalizing the physiological response to stressors, it improves the functioning of the body and increases its tolerance to stress.
Stress – the silent killer
Stress is a physiological reaction to changes and environmental influences. It can also arise under pressure, sometimes caused by a given person, e.g. high ambitions, a sense of social pressure, striving for perfection, excessive demands on oneself, eternal striving for perfection. Short-term stress has a beneficial effect, mobilizes to act in a way, but when it occurs chronically, it brings with it adverse health consequences such as depression, anxiety disorders, cardiovascular diseases, digestive system ailments. It is one of the most common factors reducing the quality of life. The World Health Organization (WHO) describes stress as the “epidemic of the 21st century”. Chronic stress has many effects, primarily:
- exhaustion, fatigue
- headaches
- lack of energy
- feeling of pressure
- low mood, dysthymia, depression
- apathy
- nervousness
- difficulty concentrating
- feeling of lack of control
- anxiety
- insomnia
- eating disorders
- stomach ache
- change in appetite
- increased use of stimulants (cigarettes, alcohol)
- neurosis
- prone to errors
- back pain
- increased muscle tension
- increased blood pressure
- sexual dysfunction
Reducing the negative impact of stress on the body is extremely important. Sometimes it is difficult to exclude the presence of stressful situations in our lives, but with the use of adaptogens we can increase the body’s tolerance to such stimuli, so that the physiological reactions will not be as strong.
Rhodiola rosea – a stress buster
Rhodiola rosea contains many bioactive compounds that are classified as adaptogens. Adaptogens are natural substances that increase the body’s ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions, including stress stimuli. They help restore the body’s balance, normalize its functions, and reduce the negative impact of stress on the body.
According to scientific studies, taking tablets containing Rhodiola rosea extract for at least 4 weeks improves the ability to concentrate, increases mental efficiency and reduces stress and anxiety. It also improves mood and eliminates the feeling of fatigue associated with chronic stress. The first effects can be expected after 2 weeks of starting supplementation. Another important effect of Rhodiola rosea extract is its ability to lower the level of cortisol, known as the stress hormone. Salidrosides are mainly responsible for this activity.
Rhodiola rosea to improve mood
Rhodiola rosea contains many active compounds that can increase serotonin levels, which then improves mood. The active substances are mainly salidrosides, which affect neurotransmission. They also affect many proteins, signaling pathways, genes and receptors that play a role in the development of depression. Salidrosides can be used as substances that help improve mood and reduce stress, but when alarm symptoms appear, such as anxiety, hypertension or depression, you should make an appointment with a doctor to prescribe appropriately selected medications. Rhodiola rosea extract can be used to support the treatment of depression and anxiety, but it cannot be the only method of treatment, but only to complement pharmacological agents.
Rhodiola rosea – a free radical scavenger
Plant polyphenols and other active substances contained in Rhodiola rosea exhibit antioxidant activity, which means that they neutralize the effects of harmful free radicals, preventing oxidative stress. This is a very important property, because oxidative stress damages all components of the cell, including DNA, proteins and lipids, and also accelerates the aging process.
Rhodiola rosea for inflammation
Many scientific studies confirm the anti-inflammatory properties of Rhodiola rosea. It has been shown that the use of its extract can reduce the concentration of many pro-inflammatory compounds, including interleukin 6, tumor necrosis factor alpha, C-reactive protein, and the transcription factor NF-kappaB. A decrease in the activity of enzymes associated with the development of inflammation, including cyclooxygenase-1 and phospholipase A2, has also been observed.
Who is the rosary for?
Rhodiola rosea is especially recommended for people affected by:
- mental and physical exhaustion
- chronic stress
- low mood
- low immunity
- tiredness
Rhodiola rosea-based preparations are also recommended for people who do mental work and for athletes, because it accelerates post-training regeneration.
