Reishi mushrooms have been used for over two thousand years in traditional medicine in the Far East. The mushrooms were considered magical and were collected from damp banks. Information about reishi mushrooms can be found in many different sources, dating back to hundreds of years before our era. In Asia, they are a symbol of strong health and longevity. They were used to make talismans that were supposed to protect against disease.

Reishi – Ganoderma lucidum or Ganoderma lucidum: A medicinal mushroom called the divine mushroom of immortality

Reishi mushrooms are the Japanese name for a species of mushroom that belongs to the family of lingzhi mushrooms. They are also called lingzhi, which in Chinese means a herb with spiritual power. In Asia, reishi mushrooms are considered a cure for almost any ailment.

Reishi mushrooms are characterized by a semicircular shape and a brown color. There are as many as 6 varieties of these mushrooms (white, yellow, red, blue, purple and black), but according to scientists, the most valuable is the red one. Growing reishi mushrooms is demanding, and the inhabitants of the areas where they occur surround them with religious reverence.

Mushrooms have a very rich history and for at least 4 thousand years, doctors have discovered many uses for reishi. People at that time believed that mushrooms strengthen fertility or aid in weight loss. In ancient times, reishi was sought after by almost all travelers, because it was believed that it had magical powers. They were not deterred by the fact that these mushrooms could only be found in very remote corners of the world. Every king wanted to own this mushroom, and local poets wrote works with reishi as the main character – such information can be found in Chinese records from the 16th century.

Reishi Mushroom – Secret Action and Properties

Reishi mushrooms are a wealth of valuable active ingredients for health. These include polysaccharide compounds, such as alpha- and beta-glucans, coumarin and alkaloids. Particularly noteworthy are the steroid components, which resemble human hormones, including sex hormones, among which we can distinguish, for example, ganoderic acid. In addition, reishi mushrooms contain vitamins and minerals, such as manganese, copper, magnesium, zinc, germanium and vitamins from the B group and 17 amino acids. The properties of all these substances cause the mushroom to have a health-promoting effect on the human body.

Supporting the immune system

Reishi contains beta-glucan, which increases the number of T lymphocytes and macrophages, which translates into improved immunity. Thanks to this, it is worth consuming reishi mushrooms during the autumn-winter period, but also during chemotherapy, when the body is very weakened. It is also worth knowing other ways to strengthen the body of adults.

Blood level regulation

Reishi mushroom extract lowers blood glucose levels, which may inhibit an enzyme used by the liver to produce glucose. They may also prevent or slow the progression of diabetic kidney complications.

Prevention of circulatory diseases

Due to the content of triterpenes, reishi mushrooms lower blood pressure, but also have anti-aggregation effects, thanks to which they prevent the development of atherosclerosis. Thanks to this, reishi is an effective agent in the prevention of circulatory system diseases.

Beneficial effect on relieving allergies

Triterpenoids also have antihistamine effects. They block compounds that are mediators of inflammation, which reduces the severity of allergies. This has an effect on calming an overactive immune system, which can have a beneficial effect on people with allergies and autoimmune diseases. Reishi mushrooms may therefore prove to be an effective alternative to anti-allergic drugs.

Antibacterial and antiviral effects

The polysaccharides present in the mushroom support the immune system in the fight against the Epstein-Barr virus, which is responsible for mononucleosis. In addition, the ganoderic acids contained in Ganoderma, which are a part of Ganoderma, act against the HIV virus, significantly reducing its replication.

Promoting longevity

Consuming reishi mushrooms can improve both the quality and length of life. By modulating and stimulating the functions of the immune system, the body becomes more resistant to the adverse effects of external factors.

Other properties of reishi mushrooms:

  • alleviating the symptoms of bronchial asthma,
  • effectively supports the treatment of bronchitis,
  • supporting the fight against diabetes,
  • supporting the fight against neurodegenerative diseases,
  • making it easier to fall asleep,
  • antioxidant effect by reducing excess free radicals.

Reishi Mushroom for Cancer – Does It Work?

There have been many studies that show that reishi mushrooms may have anti-cancer effects. They contain polysaccharides and saponins, which reduce the proliferation of cancer cells in lungs affected by cancer. This effect is supposed to be the result of cancer cell death, which is caused by the aforementioned substances. Other studies show that reishi mushrooms can reduce the number of tumors in people struggling with non-cancerous rectal and colon tumors.

What are the side effects of using reishi mushroom?

Reishi are relatively safe to use, but remember to consume the right doses. It is recommended that mushrooms in powdered form be used for no longer than 30 days. With longer consumption, the following may occur:

  • itching,
  • headaches and dizziness,
  • indigestion,
  • rash,
  • bloody stools,
  • nose bleed.

In people who suffer from thrombocytopenia, consuming a higher dose than the norm may increase the risk of bleeding. In the worst case, it may cause liver damage.

As in any case, eating reishi mushrooms has several contraindications. The mushroom should not be taken by children, pregnant women and breastfeeding women, because there are no studies that would confirm the safety of its use in these groups of people. In addition, all people struggling with hypertension, low blood pressure and having problems with blood clotting should avoid eating them. Reishi mushrooms should also be excluded by people who are about 2 weeks before or after surgery.
