Neosine 500 mg is a tablet medicine intended for adults and children over 1 year of age. The active substance of Neosine is inosine pranobex, which inhibits the multiplication of pathogenic viruses from the Herpes group. Neosine 500 mg has antiviral effects and also increases the body’s immunity (stimulates the immune system). Neosine 500 mg can be used as a support in people with reduced immunity, also in the treatment of cold sores on the lips and face.
Indications
Neosine 500 mg is used as a support:
- in people with reduced immunity, in the case of recurrent upper respiratory tract infections,
- in the treatment of cold sores on the lips and face caused by the herpes simplex virus.
Composition
1 tablet contains:
- inosine pranobex 500 mg,
- other ingredients are: wheat starch, mannitol, povidone 30, magnesium stearate.
Action
Antiviral and increases the body’s immunity (stimulates the activity of the immune system).
Dosage
Always take Neosine 500 mg exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
- Adults, including the elderly (over 65 years): the recommended dose is 50 mg/kg of body weight per day – usually 1 g, i.e. 2 tablets 3 times a day.
Do not take more than 8 tablets per day. - Children over 1 year of age: the recommended dose is 50 mg per kg of body weight per day, given in several divided doses.
Do not take more than 4 tablets per day. - For children who cannot swallow tablets, it is recommended to administer Neosine in syrup.
- The drug is usually used for 5 to 14 days.
- After the symptoms of the disease have subsided, it is recommended to take the drug for another 1 to 2 days.
Contraindications
Allergy to the active substance (inosine pranobex) or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
- When allergic reactions occur: skin rash, itching, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue.
- When the patient is currently having a gout attack (severe joint pain with swelling and redness of the skin or effusion in large joints) or tests have shown an increased level of uric acid in the blood.
- The medicine should not be used in children under 1 year of age.
Storage
Neosine should be stored in a place out of sight and reach of children, at a temperature below 25˚C, in its original packaging.
Side Effects
Neosine 500 mg, like any other medicine, may cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them.
Common (affects 1 to 10 in 100 patients):
- Abdominal pain
- Joint pain
- Itching, skin rash
- Headache or dizziness
- Fatigue, malaise
- Nausea and vomiting
- Temporary increase in uric acid levels in the blood
- Elevated liver enzymes or blood urea nitrogen levels
Uncommon (affects 1 to 10 in 1,000 patients):
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Nervousness
- Drowsiness or difficulty sleeping (insomnia)
- Excessive urination (polyuria)
Interactions
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you are currently taking, have recently taken, or plan to take, such as:
- Medications for gout (e.g., allopurinol or other xanthine oxidase inhibitors)
- Medications that increase uric acid excretion, including diuretics (which increase urine production), e.g., furosemide, torasemide, ethacrynic acid, hydrochlorothiazide, chlortalidone, indapamide
- Immunosuppressive drugs (used in patients post-organ transplant or for atopic dermatitis)
- Zidovudine (a medication used to treat AIDS)
Warnings and Precautions
Before starting Neosine, talk to your doctor or pharmacist:
- If you have had gout attacks or increased uric acid levels – this medication may cause temporary increases in uric acid in the blood and urine.
- If you have had kidney stones.
- If you have kidney function problems – during treatment, your doctor will regularly monitor your blood and kidney function.
- For long-term treatment (3 months or more), your doctor will regularly order blood tests and monitor kidney and liver function.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, suspect you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine.
Do not take this medicine during pregnancy and breastfeeding without consulting your doctor, who will assess if the benefits outweigh the risks to the child.
Driving and Operating Machinery
This medicine may affect your ability to drive and use machines.
If you experience headaches, dizziness, or drowsiness, do not drive, operate machinery, or perform other tasks requiring concentration.
This medicine contains wheat starch
It should not be used by patients allergic (hypersensitive) to wheat (other than celiac disease).
Neosine can be used by patients with celiac disease.
