Effects of milk thistle
The plant’s action profile is really about the effect of silymarin, contained in the fruit, on liver cells and the immune system. This complex of substances stimulates hepatocytes to rebuild, but also seals their walls. Thanks to this, it prevents new damage to the liver. In addition, silymarin supports the work of immune system cells, and thanks to its antioxidant properties, it slows down the development of cancer cells.
Application of milk thistle
Milk thistle fruit dry extract is mainly used prophylactically to protect liver cells, which are susceptible to damage, e.g. during the use of many drugs. However, milk thistle has also been used in the treatment of diseases such as inflammation and cirrhosis of the liver. In addition, the plant is also used as a protection for gastric mucosa cells, a means of improving appetite and digestion of heavy meals, antispasmodic, but also anti-free radical and supporting oncological therapy.
Milk Thistle Dosage
Milk thistle should be taken during or immediately after a meal and washed down with plenty of water. It is recommended for regular long-term treatment lasting from 1 to 6 months. Depending on the form of the preparation containing milk thistle, the dosage is slightly different. Thus, you should take the following daily:
- milk thistle capsules : 1 to 2 capsules 2-3 times daily, do not exceed the recommended dose (diarrhea may occur)
Milk thistle (Sylibum marianum) occurs wild in meadows, but can also be cultivated. Characteristic features of this plant include purple flowers and prickly leaves. Due to its range of valuable ingredients and medicinal properties, milk thistle fruit is used in medicine. This raw material is mainly rich in silymarin, which is a complex of several substances with strong antioxidant effects. Above all, however, it is known for its beneficial effects on the liver and digestive system. Silymarin has the following effects:
- choleretic,
- spasmolytic,
- anti-inflammatory,
- regenerative on liver cells,
- detoxifying – therefore it is used in death cap poisoning and in alcoholic liver disease.
Silymarin is not the only valuable ingredient found in milk thistle seeds. They also contain:
- essential oils and bitters – supporting digestion and having a spasmolytic effect,
- oil rich in linoleic, oleic and palmitic acid – with high antioxidant potential and cardioprotective effects,
- plant sterols – helping to maintain proper cholesterol levels,
- vitamin E – a natural antioxidant.
It’s no wonder that one of the most popular herbs supporting liver function and digestive processes is milk thistle. The properties of this plant have made it widely used in medicine for centuries.
Milk thistle – contraindications
Because silymarin affects liver cells, it can also affect the metabolism of some drugs. Therefore, it is worth being especially careful when reaching for milk thistle tablets during therapy with, among others, metronidazole. As a rule and for safety reasons, it is always worth informing the doctor about the preparations used, even if we reach for them on our own.
Silymarin should also be used with caution in cases of blocked bile ducts. Its choleretic effect can cause jaundice and other health consequences related to the accumulation of bile in the gallbladder and its difficult outflow. Allergic reactions to milk thistle also occur. This applies to people who are also allergic to other plants from the Asteraceae family, such as chamomile, marigold and arnica.
Tablets containing silymarin should not be taken by pregnant women, nursing mothers or children under 12 years of age.
