What does fenugreek contain?

In addition to typical nutrients such as proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, about 175 biologically active compounds have been identified in fenugreek seeds, such as steroids, terpenoids, phenolic acids, flavonoids, alkaloids and specific forms of dietary fibre.

How does fenugreek work?

A wide range of systematic reviews of scientific data show that  fenugreek primarily improves  the human body’s sugar and lipid metabolism. In addition, data from numerous scientific studies show that fenugreek has antioxidant, anticancer, gastrointestinal protective, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, immunological, weight loss, and hepatoprotective (i.e. liver protective) activity.

Moreover, some studies have shown that fenugreek improves cognitive functions, alleviates the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, and has anti-anxiety, antidepressant, and neuroprotective properties, i.e. protective effects on the nervous system. Studies conducted so far have also shown evidence of hormonal activity of fenugreek’s active ingredients, which is manifested by supporting milk production in lactating women, improving sexual abilities in the case of male impotence, and supporting exercise adaptation in physically active people and athletes.

Several directions of fenugreek action, best confirmed by modern science, are worth taking a closer look at…

Fenugreek as an antioxidant

The term “oxidative stress” refers to a state characterized by an imbalance between the amount of oxidants and antioxidants in the human body, which can lead to the development of various diseases. Oxidative stress plays a fundamental role in the pathogenesis of diabetes and cancer, as well as health complications associated with these diseases.

Studies have shown that supplementation with fenugreek seeds has high antioxidant potential by regulating the activity of antioxidant enzymes and increasing the level of small-molecule antioxidants such as polyphenols and vitamin C. Fenugreek seeds contain a significant amount of flavonoids and other phenolic compounds, which are responsible for the natural antioxidant properties of this spice.

It was this previously widely observed correlation between antioxidant properties and health benefits of natural products that prompted scientists to investigate the antioxidant activity of fenugreek seeds. These studies have shown that consuming fenugreek seeds can potentially mitigate excessive lipid peroxidation and modulate the levels of intrinsic antioxidant molecules in the circulatory system.

Fenugreek in the fight against diabetes

Fenugreek has long enjoyed a reputation as an antidiabetic agent, effective in both type 1 and type 2 diabetics. Studies published in 1986 demonstrated that mature fenugreek herb, fenugreek fiber, and whole and defatted fenugreek seeds were effective in lowering blood sugar levels and enhancing insulin response in diabetics. Subsequent studies have shown that fenugreek fiber delays gastric emptying and inhibits the release of peptides that inhibit insulinotropic hormones, which lower blood sugar levels.

Fenugreek seeds contain a large amount of galactomannan – a specific form of soluble dietary fiber, diosgenin, trigonelline, 4-hydroxyisoleucine, flavonoid glycosides and other biologically active ingredients that have antidiabetic activity, improving the human body’s insulin response. The use of fenugreek seed decoction in scientific studies has shown the potential to improve diabetes control, reducing glycosuria and generally easing the burden of this disease.

Fenugreek against obesity

Studies have shown that the dietary fiber of fenugreek seeds, or galactomannan, has high activity as an anti-obesity agent. This effect is attributed to the ability of galactomannan to form a gel in the intestines that impedes the absorption of sugars and fats.

Aqueous extract of fenugreek seeds has been shown in studies to be effective in limiting the increase in blood triglyceride levels, the accumulation of stored fat in adipose tissue, weight gain and body mass index, and the increase in blood sugar and insulin levels, under experimental conditions of feeding laboratory animals with high-energy, high-fat diets.

Another study has shown that a newly identified compound naturally occurring in fenugreek seeds, coded under the symbol INDUS810, effectively inhibits weight gain, development of adipose tissue and fatty liver disease associated with feeding a high-calorie, high-fat diet, while simultaneously reducing the level of the so-called bad LDL cholesterol fraction in blood serum.

Further studies have yielded scientific evidence that fenugreek fibre significantly reduces appetite, particularly in obese individuals, that fenugreek flavonoids lower cholesterol levels, and that dietary supplementation with fenugreek promotes weight loss and has a positive effect on regulating blood pressure and cholesterol levels, particularly in individuals with elevated cholesterol levels.

Fenugreek for stronger and bigger muscles

However, fenugreek is known among physically active people not only for helping to reduce body fat, but also for supporting the development of muscle mass and strength. Especially since this activity has been confirmed by several scientific studies.

As it results from these studies, among others, fenugreek increases the level of one of the most important hormones for shaping muscle mass and strength in the human body – testosterone. At the same time, the plant steroids from the furostanol group present in fenugreek seeds, due to their structural similarity, act on muscles similarly to testosterone-derived drugs from the anabolic-androgenic steroid group.

For example, in one study, researchers either gave strength-training athletes 500 mg of fenugreek extract or an inactive placebo for 8 weeks. After the trial was over, the fenugreek group showed significant improvement in strength training and muscle mass gains, while reducing body fat, compared with the placebo group. Compared with the placebo group, the fenugreek group improved their bench press results by an average of 5 kilograms, and increased muscle mass by almost 4 kilograms.
