Uncaria tomentosa
Vilcacora is also known by other names – Latin: Uncaria tomentosa, English: cat’s claw, Polish: czepota plona, koci pazur. It belongs to the Rubiaceae family. It is a vine (liana) growing in the tropical forests of South and Central America. It grows up to 60 m long. It owes its name to its characteristic tendrils, which are clinging thorns that resemble cat’s claws. They grow from the base of the leaves and help climb the tree. It has a woody stem.
The herbal raw material is the bark, the history of which dates back to 2000 years. Its inner part is used. In the traditional medicine of the Amazonian people, a decoction was made from it and it was used for arthritis, infections, weakness, cleansing the kidneys and strengthening the body, for pain, rheumatism, inflammation (e.g. of the intestines), stomach ulcers, asthma and externally for wounds.
Active compounds
The main bioactive compounds are pentacyclic oxoindole alkaloids: (uncarine, pteropodine, isopteropodine, speciophiline, mitraphylline, isomitraphylline, and others) and tetracyclic (rynchophylline, isorhynchophylline, corynoxeine, isocorynoxeine, hirsuteine, hirsutine, corynoanteine), but also glycosides, triterpenes, flavonoids (quercetin, rutin), phytosteroids (b-phytosterol, campesterol) and catechins (procyanidins). These compounds increase the activity of phagocytosis, activate and increase the number of T and B lymphocytes. In addition to alkaloids, the raw material contains compounds belonging to glycosides, triterpenes, flavonoids (rutin, quercetin, phytosteroids), catechins, organic acids, tannins, triterpene saponins, and sterols.
Features and operation
Vilcacora, thanks to the compounds it contains, is used as an immunostimulant, i.e. a means of increasing the body’s defense capabilities. Its action includes the stimulation of phagocytosis, i.e. a method of defending the body against pathogenic factors (an element of non-specific immunity).
According to EFSA publications (European Food Safety Authority), vilcacora has been shown to support:
- Immune system
- The musculoskeletal system – health, flexibility and mobility of joints, bones and muscles
