Frankincense – what is it?

Frankincense  is the common name for a plant with the species name  Boswellia serrata . It is also often called Indian frankincense, due to its most popular place of occurrence – the Indian subcontinent. In addition to the most popular India, we can also find this plant in Pakistan and northeastern Africa.

Frankincense is a tree that produces  a fragrant resin called olibanum.  Due to its scent properties, it is used in the production of incense. Interestingly, frankincense was most likely found in the biblical incense brought by one of the Three Wise Men. Moreover, oilbanum is a valued and used for centuries in Asian (mainly Ayurvedic) and African folk medicine as a multifunctional medicine.

Properties of frankincense

Due to the fact that  frankincense extract  (most often in the form of oil) has health-promoting properties, it has been subjected to numerous scientific studies. It has been shown to have  anti-inflammatory, analgesic, immune-stimulating, calming, antibacterial and anticancer effects.  The above-mentioned properties are mainly due to boswellic acids contained in frankincense resin extract . It is estimated that they constitute about 30% of pure resin.

The action of frankincense

The properties of frankincense can be used in the treatment of diseases such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.  In the conducted studies, patients undergoing the treatment reported pain relief or easing of inflammation. It was also shown that taking frankincense – in addition to easing pain – had a positive effect on increasing the range of movement of diseased joints or reducing their swelling.

Other diseases whose treatment may be supported by the use of  anti-inflammatory preparations containing frankincense are diseases from the group of non-specific intestinal inflammations, such as Crohn’s disease.

Asthma is another disease that Frankincense’s healing properties can be used to treat.  Boswellic acids reduce the amount of leukotrienes  – lipids associated with the immune system – that cause muscle spasms responsible for bronchial movement.

Scientific studies have shown that the boswellic acids contained in the frankincense extract  have anti-cancer effects . Due to the complexity of the mechanisms of cancer cell formation and spread, frankincense cannot be hailed as a universal cure for this type of disease. Nevertheless,  positive results have been shown in the treatment of breast cancer, leukemia, brain tumors, and pancreatic tumors .

Frankincense – side effects

Possible side effects of using frankincense extract preparations include nausea, heartburn, diarrhea, or rash.  It can also increase blood flow to the uterus, thereby increasing menstrual bleeding or contributing to miscarriage. You should also be vigilant about possible interactions with medications, especially nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen or aspirin.
