What is Actifed and what is it used for?
Actifed contains:
- triprolidine,
- pseudoephedrine
- and dextromethorphan.
Triprolidine is an antiallergic drug that reduces swelling of the nasal mucosa, nasal discharge, itching and sneezing.
Pseudoephedrine is a drug that decongests the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract.
Dextromethorphan has an antitussive effect by inhibiting the cough center in the medulla oblongata. As a result of the action of three active substances, the drug relieves cold symptoms, such as runny nose and cough.
Actifed is a transparent syrup with a red color and blackberry flavor.
What are the indications for using Actifed?
Actifed is indicated for the relief of symptoms accompanying inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, in which it is beneficial to administer a nasal decongestant, antiallergic drug and antitussive drug. The drug is indicated for use in adults and children aged 7 years and older.
Active substance: Dextromethorphani hydrobromidum , Pseudoephedrini hydrochloridum , Tripirolidini hydrochloridum
Composition
5 ml of syrup contains: | 1.25 mg triprolidine hydrochloride |
30 mg pseudoephedrine hydrochloride | |
10 mg dextromethorphan hydrobromide | |
Other ingredients are: sorbitol solution 70%, sucrose, sodium benzoate, methyl hydroxybenzoate, cochineal red, ethanol 96%, blackberry flavor, levomenthol, vanillin, purified water. |
How to use Actifed?
Always use this medicine exactly as described in the package leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
The drug is administered orally.
Dosage for adults and children over 12 years of age:
10 ml of syrup three or four times a day.
The maximum daily dose is 40 ml.
Dosage for children aged 7 to 12 years:
5 ml of syrup three or four times a day.
The maximum daily dose is 20 ml.
Actifed syrup is contraindicated in children under 7 years of age.
When should Actifed not be used?
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Very rarely (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people) the following have been reported since the medicine was first marketed:
- anxiety, euphoria, hallucinations, irritability, nervousness,
- headache, paresthesia (unpleasant sensation, most often tingling, numbness or change in skin temperature), excessive motor activity, drowsiness, tremor,
- heart rhythm disturbances, palpitations, increased heart rate,
- nose bleed,
- abdominal discomfort, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting,
- the occurrence of limited swelling, rash, itching, hives,
- painful urination, urinary retention,
- tiredness, feeling shaky,
- drug allergy, allergy,
- increase in blood pressure.
