Lemon oil, cold pressed from the peel, 100% essential
10ml
Lemon essential oil is cold pressed from lemon peels. It is one of the most popular essential oils, with a wide range of uses in perfumery, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and chemicals.
It is not difficult to guess what lemon oil smells like. However, it must be emphasized that its juicy and refreshing scent is so authentic that it stimulates salivation, as if you were about to eat a lemon or drink lemon juice. At first, this oil seemed… boring to me. You can find something with a lemon scent or taste everywhere. However, its pure, uninterrupted, intense, sweet and sour “lemoniness” is so pleasant that I really liked it. Lemon oil blends exceptionally well with oils with spicy and sweet scents. Try its combination with cinnamon, lemon balm or ylang ylang.
The lemon comes from China, but today it is no longer found there, not even in cultivation. From Asia in the 5th century AD it came to Mesopotamia, and later to Palestine and Egypt thanks to the Arabs. Then it was discovered by Europeans, who conquered the Middle East, and started its cultivation in all the Mediterranean countries. In turn, it was brought to America by Christopher Columbus.
FEATURES
- Lemon oil is sometimes called “liquid sunshine.” And for good reason, because its scent reduces anxiety and stress, and also lifts the mood. It also has a good effect on concentration, promoting learning and intellectual work.
It is worth mentioning the study by Farhad et al., which examined the effect of lemon oil on the mood of post-operative patients. It turned out that aromatherapy with lemon oil reduced fear and anxiety, which often appear in patients after major surgeries [1]. A 2006 study on rats showed that lemon oil has an antidepressant effect by affecting serotonin receptors [2]. Yet another study showed that lemon oil can improve cognitive functions [3].
- Lemon oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties. It is a great addition to a cream or tonic for acne skin – it cleanses the skin of bacteria, brightens the complexion, and additionally helps heal and disappear pimples. It can also be applied (in dilution) to hands and feet affected by fungus. Just remember not to expose the skin to the sun after using lemon oil – the oil is photosensitizing.
- Interestingly, lemon oil can be useful for pregnant women who experience morning sickness. There was even a study on this topic, in which 100 women in early pregnancy, experiencing nausea and vomiting, were subjected to aromatherapy using lemon oil. This resulted in a significant reduction in unpleasant symptoms, lasting for several days [4].
APPLICATION
- in aromatherapy to improve mood, relieve stress, anxiety and tension
- for learning and intellectual work
- for nausea and vomiting
- for skin care, especially acne-prone skin
- for fungal infections of hands and feet
HOW TO USE
- Aromatherapy burner – it is not recommended to heat citrus oils, because then they lose their aromatic and health-promoting properties. It is best to place them in a diffuser. If you do not have a diffuser, sprinkle the oil on a tissue, fabric, towel, blanket. This will be enough to “spread” the volatile compounds and beautiful scent in the room.
- Inhalation – put a few drops of oil on a handkerchief and inhale it several times a day.
- Bath – Add 3-15 drops of oil to a tub of hot water and mix well. Soak in the water for at least 20 minutes. Do not use detergents (it is best to take a shower before bathing with oils).
- Massage – add 15 – 30 drops of oil to 50 ml of carrier oil (e.g. sweet almond) and mix.

PLANT CHARACTERISTICS
Common lemon (Citrus limon) is a tree or shrub from the Rutaceae family. It comes from China, but interestingly, it no longer occurs there either naturally or in cultivation. It is believed to have been created by crossing a lime (Citrus aurantifolia) with a citron (Citrus medica). It grows to 5, rarely 10 m in height. Its branches are covered with thorns. The leaves are large, shiny, oval in shape and have serrated edges. The flowers are fivefold, with narrow, white petals, intensely fragrant. Everyone knows the fruit.
