Dalmatian Sage Oil 100% Nanga Essential Oil (Salvia officinalis)
Salvia officinalis essential oil, also known as Dalmatian sage, is obtained by steam distillation from the fragrant, fleshy leaves of this plant. This oil should be used with caution due to its high content of toxic thujone (20-40%).
Sage and the oil obtained from it are excellent raw materials for oral care, which have been used for this purpose for many years. Sage extracts can therefore be found in various products intended for teeth, mouth and throat. Sage, and especially sage oil, have a disinfecting and anti-inflammatory effect on mucous membranes and skin.
The bactericidal and fungicidal properties of Dalmatian sage were known in antiquity. Ancient Greek and Roman physicians recommended it in the fight against skin diseases, flu and colds, as well as infections of the throat, mouth and upper respiratory tract. Sage was also used to support indigestion, flatulence and during abundant feasts.
An interesting property of sage and sage oil, discovered relatively recently, is its positive effect on cognitive abilities and memory. Moreover, the results of animal studies suggest that sage inhibits the development of Alzheimer’s disease and has neuroprotective effects [2].
Sage oil is an interesting fragrance component of perfumes and cosmetics. It is mainly used in creating fragrances for men. It is also used in the food industry as an aromatic additive to food and alcohol, mainly vermouth.
