Angelica – properties:
The medicinal raw material of the angel herb is its fruit, root and flowers. The substances with medicinal effects found in the raw materials include essential oils, organic acids, coumarin, vitamin C, B vitamins, pectin and tannin. This plant primarily has a beneficial effect on the digestive system. It stimulates the secretion of digestive juices and bile. It eliminates flatulence, intestinal and stomach spasms, regulates defecation and stimulates appetite. Additionally, this herb affects the nervous system, is used as a natural antidepressant and sedative. It increases immunity and has a diuretic effect. Properly prepared, it is also used as a disinfectant and analgesic.
To sum up the most important medicinal properties of angelica, the following should be mentioned:
- Beneficial effect on the digestive system,
- Stimulates the secretion of digestive juices,

- Stimulates appetite,
- Regulates bowel movements,

It is also worth checking out the properties of sage, which has, among other things, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

Based on the properties of angelica, the following indications for the use of angelica are listed:
- Digestive disorders,
- Painkillers,

- Loss of appetite.
Should you use angelica during pregnancy?
It is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. The desire to use angelica during pregnancy should be reported to the attending physician and this decision should be consulted with him. There is a lack of reliable data on the safety of using this raw material during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Due to its strong effect on the digestive system, including its alleged spasmolytic effect, it is suspected that it could lead to, for example, uncontrolled uterine contractions.
Angelica – contraindications:
People who are sensitive to sunlight should not expose their skin to the sun while taking angelica preparations. Caution is also advised in cases of inflammation of the glomeruli and appendix.
Products containing Angelica should be used in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements and physician’s guidelines. Do not use after the expiration date. Store out of reach and sight of children, at an appropriate temperature and in a tightly closed container. When using, pay attention to the expiration date on the packaging.
If we do not have sufficient knowledge about the differences in species of medicinal plants, we should be careful when collecting angelica growing in the wild, because the plant looks similar to Sosnowsky’s Hogweed, direct contact with which can result in very painful burns.
Angelica – side effects:
The use of angelica by healthy people should not be met with side effects, but it can sometimes lead – especially in excessive dosage – to digestive problems, such as hyperacidity, stomach cramps, excessive intestinal peristalsis or diarrhea. It is also worth remembering the contraindications mentioned above, which, if not observed, can lead to more serious health effects.
