Neosine Forte 500 mg/5 ml syrup, with a banana flavor, is an over-the-counter medication for children over 1 year old and adults. How does Neosine Forte syrup work?
Neosine Forte contains inosine pranobex, an active ingredient that inhibits the replication of viruses harmful to humans, especially those from the Herpes group.

Indications
Neosine Forte is recommended for children over 1 year old and adults:
- As a supportive treatment for recurring upper respiratory infections in individuals with weakened immunity.
- For the treatment of herpes on the lips and face caused by the herpes simplex virus (Herpes simplex).
Composition
Each 1 ml of syrup contains:
- Active ingredient: 100 mg of inosine pranobex.
- Other ingredients: Methyl parahydroxybenzoate, propyl parahydroxybenzoate, sucrose, sodium saccharin, citric acid, sodium hydroxide, banana flavor AR 0010, purified water.
Each 5 ml of syrup contains:
- Active ingredient: 500 mg of inosine pranobex.
- Other ingredients: Methyl parahydroxybenzoate, propyl parahydroxybenzoate, sucrose, sodium saccharin, citric acid, sodium hydroxide, banana flavor AR 0010, purified water.
Effect
- Antiviral and immunity-boosting.
Dosage
This medication should always be taken exactly as described in the patient leaflet or as prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist. When in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist. The syrup is to be taken orally.
- Adults, including the elderly (over 65 years old): Usually 10 ml of syrup 3 or 4 times a day (0.5 ml of syrup per kg of body weight per day). The maximum dose is 4 g of inosine pranobex (i.e., 40 ml of syrup) per day.
- Children over 1 year old: 0.5 ml of syrup per kg of body weight per day, divided into 3 doses.
A dosing cup is included in the package for measuring the exact amount of the medication. For recurrent herpes infections, treatment should begin at the first signs of symptoms. Treatment typically lasts 5 to 14 days. It is recommended to continue the medication for 1 to 2 days after symptoms have resolved. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
Contraindications
Do not use Neosine Forte if you are allergic to the active ingredient (inosine pranobex) or any other component of this medicine. Signs of an allergic reaction may include skin rash, itching, breathing difficulties, or swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue.
Do not use in case of an acute gout attack or if there is an increased level of uric acid in the blood (as shown in tests).
Do not use in children under 1 year of age.
Storage
Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Store at temperatures below 25°C. Do not refrigerate or freeze.
Side Effects
Like all medicines, Neosine Forte may cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them.

Common (affects 1 to 10 in 100 patients):
- Temporary increase in uric acid levels in the blood and urine.
- Increase in liver enzyme activity or blood urea nitrogen levels.
- Nausea, with or without vomiting.
- Abdominal pain.
- Itching or skin rash.
- Headache or dizziness.
- Fatigue, malaise.
- Joint pain.

Uncommon (affects 1 to 10 in 1,000 patients):
- Diarrhea.
- Constipation.
- Nervousness.
- Drowsiness or insomnia.
- Polyuria (increased urine output).
Interactions
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medications you are currently taking or have recently taken, as well as any you plan to take, especially if you are using:
- Medications for gout (e.g., allopurinol or other xanthine oxidase inhibitors).
- Medications that increase the excretion of uric acid, including diuretics (increased urine production), e.g., furosemide, torasemide, ethacrynic acid, hydrochlorothiazide, chlorthalidone, indapamide.
- Immunosuppressive medications (used in patients after organ transplants or with atopic dermatitis).
- Zidovudine (used for treating AIDS).
Warnings and Precautions
Before using Neosine Forte, discuss it with your doctor or pharmacist:
- If you’ve had gout attacks or elevated uric acid levels in the past, this medication may temporarily increase uric acid levels in the blood and urine.
- If you’ve had kidney stones.
- If you have kidney problems, your doctor will monitor your blood and kidney function regularly during treatment with Neosine Forte.
- If the treatment is long-term (3 months or longer), your doctor will perform regular blood, kidney, and liver function tests.
- Neosine Forte contains sucrose, methyl parahydroxybenzoate, propyl parahydroxybenzoate, and sodium:
- Consult your doctor if you have been told you have an intolerance to certain sugars.
- The medicine contains 600 mg of sucrose in 1 ml of syrup. This should be considered in patients with diabetes.
- The medicine contains methyl parahydroxybenzoate and propyl parahydroxybenzoate, which may cause allergic reactions (possible delayed reactions).
- It contains 17.5 mg of sodium in 10 ml of syrup, equivalent to 0.9% of the maximum recommended daily sodium intake for adults.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Neosine Forte should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding without consulting a doctor who will assess whether the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the child.
Driving and Using Machines
Neosine Forte may affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. If you experience headaches, dizziness, or drowsiness, do not drive, operate machinery, or perform tasks requiring concentration.
